The Boone Toreadors football team won a nail-biter during their season opener against the Greene County Rams at Linduska Field in Jefferson.
This was a low-scoring affair for both sides, as Boone walked away with a 14-7 win over the Rams. There also weren’t heaps of offensive yards on both sides, and each team fought hard for what they got.
Boone and Greene County traded touchdowns in the first quarter, and it was tied 7-7 heading into the second quarter. The play that broke the tie was a beautiful 28-yard touchdown pass from Ashten Petersen to Ryder Hilsabeck, where Hilsabeck had to go over the defender to get the ball, and the defender was penalized in the process.
After that go-ahead score in the second quarter, neither team generated points for the rest of the game.
Petersen finished the game going 7/10 for 45 yards and one touchdown through the air, not a bad day at the office.
Petersen also led all ball carriers with a game-high 80 yards on 15 carries. Maddox McIntyre was a bell cow for Boone, carrying the ball 18 times for 70 yards and a touchdown. Hilsabeck also had one carry for five yards.
Defensively, Hilsabeck led the team with 10 tackles, followed by George Grote and Fawkes Schroeder with five apiece, Patrick Houser, Jungck, and Anthony Heenan with four apiece, Richard Lennon IV and Romero Joung Jr. with three-and-a-half apiece, Ethan Stecker with two-and-a-half, Javier Casiano and Jonathan Van Roekel with two each, Wrex Wilson with one-and-a-half, and Maxwell McLaughlin, Abel Tungesvik, and Maddox McIntyre with half a tackle each.
For turnovers, Heenan forced a fumble, and Young Jr. returned that fumble for 30 yards.
Next up, the Toreadors will welcome the Perry Bluejays to Goeppinger Field on Friday. Since 2008, these teams have faced each other 15 times, and the Toreadors lead 14-1. The Bluejays haven’t won since a 21-14 win back on September 9th, 2014. Perry is coming off a 29-8 loss to the Ogden Bulldogs.
